Southern-Style Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey
Tender, savory, and full of that slow-cooked, soulful flavor!)
Ingredients:
2 bunches fresh collard greens (washed, stems removed, and chopped)
1 smoked turkey leg or wing (for that deep Southern flavor!)
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
4 cups chicken broth (or water, but broth makes them richer!)
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (balances the flavors!)
1 tsp salt (or to taste)
1 tsp black pepper
½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a little kick!)
1 tbsp sugar (balances out the bitterness!)
2 tbsp butter (for richness!)
Instructions:
1️⃣ In a large pot, heat butter over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sauté until fragrant.
2️⃣ Add the smoked turkey, broth, and seasonings. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer for 20-30 minutes to develop flavor.
3️⃣ Add the collard greens, stir well, and cover. Simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until greens are tender.
4️⃣ Remove the turkey leg, shred the meat, and mix it back into the greens.
5️⃣ Taste and adjust seasoning, then serve with cornbread. Whew, girl, these hit every time!
